About Kayla
My family and I recently moved to Charlotte from Arkansas! As a transracial adoptive family of 7, we knew that we had to find authentic culture, racial mirrors, and deep diversity for all members of our family. And we've found it in Charlotte! I married my middle-school sweetheart, Jerad, in 2011. I graduated with a BA in English in 2015 and an MA in Creative Writing in 2018. When I entered into the foster care and adoption space as a parent, my world radically changed. I'm always thankful for opportunities to grow, learn, stretch, feel challenged, and take time to understand opposite point of views. One of my greatest talents in life is napping, though I don't get to do it often, and I love hearing the laughs and giggles of my family. It's my favorite sound on Earth.
My Background with Adoption:
Adoption was not common amongst my family or circle of friends growing up. As an adult, though, my husband and I were youth pastors for 9 years and we had several adoptees and foster youth in our youth group. When we decided we were ready to start a family, we wanted to first become foster parents and support reunification for vulnerable families. During our licensing training, we heard the term "waiting child" and everything changed in that moment. We found out that there was a world of foster care that we didn't know about-- a world where children were no longer being reunified, and instead, the state was looking for a "forever family" for them. We met our children 9 months later.
Why ASA:
Because my children came to our family via foster care, I have spent a lot of time advocating in that space-- and I love doing so! However, I also appreciate the focus that ASA has on adoptive families who are no longer involved in the foster care system, or who adopted privately, domestically or internationally. I strongly believe in the mission behind ASA and look forward to being used in this space.
What I will do at ASA:
I have accepted the Development & Communications Manager position at ASA. I will oversee social media and other communications, including newsletters, blog posts and emails. I will also be heavily involved in fundraising and development, planning and overseeing events and activities! I plan to use my voice to encourage, educate, advocate and help strengthen the families we serve as well as share who we are with the local Charlotte community.
